On Saturday, October 8, I had the pleasure of attending the ribbon cutting and open house for the new Kappa Delta chapter house at Missouri University of Science and Technology. I had always thought the rendering of the house was beautiful, but I was utterly amazed when I saw it in person. The exterior of the house featured wide front porches on two sides, interesting roof peaks, as well as hot pink and green cement letters proudly proclaiming to the world that this house is home to Kappa Delta.
As I walked through the front doors, my expectations were high, and the interior of the house did not disappoint. I stepped into the formal living room and was immediately impressed by the vaulted ceiling and stunning chandelier; a showpiece of the house. The main living area was very open, but the fireplace and couches created a cozy feeling.
As I continued through the house, I saw many common areas that are perfect for gatherings of Kappa Delta sisters. My favorite area was the reading nook on the second floor that included really comfortable chaise lounges! In total, this new home has 11 bedrooms and 11 studies, housing 45 residents. Each floor also boasts a laundry room and snack kitchen for its residents. A large TV/study room, kitchen and chapter/dining room round out the house providing great space for the entire Epsilon Alpha chapter.
The house is visually stunning, but impressive as well, were the plans in both design and construction. The house has zoned heating and cooling systems, so controlling the temperature in one or a few areas does not impact the entire house. Appliances are all Energy Star rated. Lights in the bedrooms are on dimmer switches, so residents coming to bed later will not disturb those who are already sleeping. A large portion of the flooring is also made up of carpet squares, so one or a few can be easily replaced without having to redo the entire room. The house was built with a zip system, which is used to seal and protect it and keep it better insulated. The latest in technology was also used to keep the home secure with biometric door locks that require a valid fingerprint for entry.
Many Epsilon Alpha women came together to support the “Creating a Foundation for Our Future Campaign.” Collectively, they pledged over $600,000, and their dedication has made their dream of a new house a reality! Congratulations on your new “dream home!”
